Country Germany
City Berlin
Name ”Social City” Initiative
Date 1999
Description of the project The Social City Initiative was born as a national project in order to support and provide help to communities in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The Initiative has been implemented in Berlin
through the Neighbourhood Management (NM) program. The strategy that lies at the heart of the NM program is one of participatory decision-making used as a tool for community
empowerment and socio-economic advancement. Involving residents in the decisions regarding their neighborhoods, the project set up “Neighborhood Councils”, which serve as an organizational framework to allow for discussion and consultation to happen among citizens. Thus, the idea the program wants to promote is that local citizens are the “experts” to be consulted first in decision-making processes, the ones that know best what are the issues to be solved. The program indeed wants to focus on communities’ social capital, giving them a voice in their neighborhood’s future, and a platform to exercise this voice together with their neighbors, in turn creating an opportunity for people to build a network. Thanks to this focus on community
building and empowerment, the program approaches socio-economic issues in an innovative way, proving that a strong local community is key for economic advancement.
The Councils therefore tackle problems of segregation and discrimination, lack of educational and working opportunities, service inadequacies, housing support, and revaluation of urban areas.
The funding comes from different sources: namely, from 1999 to 2015, the national government, the European Union and Land Berlin have allocated a total of 364 million euros that have been spent in the neighborhood management areas.

Name Parque 93 (Park 93)
Date 1994
Description of the project The revitalization of the 93 Park in the neighborhood of Chicó, Bogota had become an iconic case for the city of Bogota. After years of abandoned, the neighbors of 93 went to the task of recovering the area.  In 1994 the Neighborhood Committee was founded with the support of district entities and private companies, later the Association of Friends of the 93 Park.

In 1995, when Park 93 was officially inaugurated with the support of the Share Foundation. In 2009, the association assumes directly the administration, maintenance and economic use of the Park, based on the framework agreement signed with the public administration to make this place a model for the city.

This project of revitalization of the public space promoted by the Association of Friends of the 93 Park, the Sharing Foundation and the District Administration. It is an outstanding example of citizenship and civic commitment, put at the service of the community in 1995. Thanks to its strategic location, its green areas and the urban environment that accompanies it, the park is a must-see meeting place and a suitable center for cultural activities.

Description “The Bristol Approach to Citizen Sensing” is a project spearheaded by the Knowle West Media Centre in the city of Bristol that involves many community associations, artists, residents, and organizations in different neighborhoods. The project aims at creating a participatory urban commons framework, where citizens can work together with artists, activists and techies, to prototype sensor technologies that they actually need and want,  and that could actually better their everyday lives. Indeed, the Bristol Approach tries to counteract a trend common to our cities today, which pushes for the development of smart devices that are often designed to be profitable. According to this project then, people and communities should be at the center of innovation in the city. Setting up a program for participatory sensing thus attempts at mapping the opinions, creative ideas, and needs of ordinary people, introducing technologies to citizens, which not only participate in designing new devices but also share the benefits of the common digital knowledge they create.

The ultimate goal of the Bristol Approach is the “creation of a new ‘urban commons’ where digital tools and data are used for the benefit of all”.

City Bangkok
Name Klong Toey Community Lantern
Date 2011
Description Klong Toey is currently the largest and oldest areas of informal dwellings in Bangkok. More than 140.000 people is estimated to live here, and most are living in sub-standard houses with few or no tenure rights or support from the government.

The TYIN Tegnestue Architects together with students and the community of Klong Toey and the sponsorship of Link Arkitektur & Ratio Arkitekter have designed and revitalized this public space in the heart of the neighbourhood. In addition to the main function as a football court and a public playground the project will work as a tool for the community to tackle some of the social issues in the area. A crucial factor in the continuation of the project is that the Klong Toey Community Lantern will be part of a long term strategy. This project is part of a development on a larger scale, and it has to be considered as a small contribution that might lead to positive change. With the local connection established both in the local community and a professional network in Thailand the project has greater chances of having a social sustainability.

The year long preparation period allowed the team to design and build the structure in as little as three weeks. During this period the project team got involved with the community through interviews, workshops and public meetings. The design of the structure is a combination of many basic ideas and concepts, and embodies several of the features lacking in the area including new hoops for basketball, a stage for performances or public meetings, walls for climbing and seating both inside and around the edges of the playground.
